FISH OIL

Fish oil is a rich source of omega-3 oils, including essential EPA and DHA fatty acids, critical components of brain and eye tissue. A deficiency in omega-3 oil can cause problems with learning, memory, vision, and behaviour.

Children and the elderly are particularly susceptible to the effects of omega-3 deficiency as a large amount is needed to support these phases of life. A clinical trial involving omega-3 supplementation to more than 200 pregnant and breastfeeding mothers found that by the age of four, the children’s intelligence was enhanced when compared to other children. Even throughout adulthood, we must ensure that we take in enough omega-3 to maintain brain and eye function. A prospective study of more than 500 people has found a link between a high consumption of fish, rich in omega-3, and reduced risk of developing age-related macular degeneration, one of the leading causes of blindness for the elderly.

Omega-3 fatty acids also reduce abnormal inflammation. Normally, inflammation occurs in a controlled way to promote healing following injury or infection. However, sometimes inflammation goes unchecked or may be initiated inappropriately, which can lead to diseases such as asthma and rheumatoid arthritis. Scientists believe that omega-3 oils can reduce the symptoms of inflammatory diseases because they suppress the generation of hormones that promote inflammation. They have found that dietary supplementation with fish oil rich in omega-3 led to a reduction in some asthmatic symptoms in children.

COLOSTRUM (BOVINE)

Colostrum is the milk secreted immediately after birth. It is rich in nutrients and immune factors including antibodies and lactoferrin, which are normally produced in the body during a normal immune response. They support the immune system, having anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal properties.

ZINC

Zinc is integral throughout the body and is essential for bodily functions. It maintains the integrity of our cells and organs, and has a crucial role in our immune system. Zinc keeps our skin healthy and intact, assisting it to act as a natural barrier against many infections. Zinc is also an antioxidant, protecting our body from free radicals that are generated during an immune response and sun exposure.

IODINE

Iodine is essential for our general well-being. It is required for the thyroid gland to function, regulating growth and development, in particular the brain and metabolism.

Iodine is important for brain development, particularly in pregnant and breast feeding women where iodine deficiency during pregnancy may cause irreversible harm to the baby. Throughout life, iodine is required for energy production and nutrient utilisation, so that the foods you eat are metabolised and used properly.

VITAMIN B1

Vitamin B1 is involved in energy generation, carbohydrate and amino acid metabolism. Lack of vitamin B1 can lead to problems in neural and brain function.

VITAMIN B2

Vitamin B2 also plays a role in energy generation, and eye health. Vitamin B2 helps to maintain the structure and function of eye tissue, and a deficiency can cause redness (“bloodshot” eyes) and corneal damage. This has been illustrated in scientific studies indicating that vitamin B2 is important in maintaining the structure and function of the surface of the eye, implicated in conjunctivitis and damage to the cornea. Vitamin B2 can also reduce the risk of developing cataracts, as suggested by some long-term clinical studies.

VITAMIN B12

Vitamin B12 is involved in a range of functions including cell division, energy generation, and fatty acid synthesis. It is required for normal brain and nerve functions because it is needed for the formation of myelin, a lipid coating found on nerves which speed up neural activity, and brain chemicals that are important for maintaining mood. Not surprisingly, a deficiency in vitamin B12 can lead to problems with the nervous system, including mood disorders such as depression.
